Nepalese Students for Study in Japan

Nepalese students interested in studying in Japan typically start with a 6 to 15-month Japanese language course to gain competency in the language. Afterward, they can enroll in academic studies at various Japanese colleges or universities. It is important to understand that mastering the Japanese language is a prerequisite for pursuing the main course of study in Japan.

Prospective students initially enroll in a Japanese language institution upon arriving in Japan. In many cases, they spend one to two years studying Japanese and related subjects at the language institution before taking the entrance examination for a university. Therefore, choosing the right Japanese language institution is crucial for prospective students.

There are two types of Japanese language institutions for foreign students aiming to study at Japanese universities for undergraduate or postgraduate studies:

  1. Preparatory Japanese Language Courses for Foreign Students Offered by Private Universities: These courses are part of the university curriculum and provide preparatory education in the Japanese language, society, culture, and other necessary subjects. The language of instruction is usually Japanese, but some schools offer courses in English. Students taking these courses are granted the residence status of "College Student." There are 66 private universities and junior colleges offering preparatory courses for foreign students.
  2. Preparatory Japanese Language Courses Offered by Japanese Language Institutions: Foreign students can enter these language institutions as a preparation for their undergraduate or graduate studies. Prospective students are advised to choose a Japanese language institute officially designated by the Ministry of Justice and listed on the Ministry's website. Students studying at these designated institutes can enter Japan under the "exchange student" status of residence.
